Ty Cobb Diary

Ty Cobb Diary June 18, 1901: Dear Diary, The starting shortstop for the Reds was injured so the Reds called me up from the Rompers to play for them. I played one of my best games ever. At shortstop I was flawless and at bat I collected 3 hits. Most of the people I play with are about 5 to 10 years older than me but its still fun. The team said I would be their starting shortstop and never have to play for the Rompers again.August 10, 1905: Dear Diary, I just arrived in Royston, Georgia to hear that father was dead from a shotgun blast and mother is facing arrest for involuntary manslaughter. I am in a state of shock now. The newspapers are saying that the shooting was by accident but I can never trust my mom again. I am now determined to play to perfection with the Detroit Tigers and to be the best of the best.Babe Ruth and Ty CobbMarch 10, 1908: Dear Diary, After receiving my contract from Navin, the Detroit Tigers manager, for $3,000 I refused to play. Instead I decided to talk face to face with Navin for the Detroit Tigers contract. Finally, Navin and I agreed on a contract after about 2 hours of arguing about it. He would pay me $4,000 for one year. It wasn't exactly the $5,000 a year for 3 years deal i wanted but I was satisfied. He told me if my batting average was over 300 he would pay me an $800 bonus. Including the bonus, the deal was $200 less than I was shooting for.January 30, 1911: Dear Diary, We just had our first son. Charlotte, my wife, named him Tyrus Raymond Jr. after me. Organizational Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Organizational Theory - Essay Example Leaders should only choose conflicts that are fruitful endeavors for the company in that it one, focus on the future; secondly it is material, and lastly, it has a noble purpose (Joni and Beyer, 2009, p. 50-52). The researchers also were able to come up with their own assessment tool. Since this is a qualitative research, they exhaustively defined the use of their terms. For instance, to ‘pursue a noble purpose’ means to â€Å"make your fight about improving the lives of the customers† (Joni and Beyer, 2009, p. 51), and relates to the principles of corporate values, respect, and urgency. Focusing on the future is quite self-explanatory but they still define it as the ability of an organization to forget about the past power struggles and to move on and focus on what is ahead. It answers the principles of possibility, uncertainty, and charisma. Making it material answers the principles of value, complexity, and change (Joni and Beyer, 2009, p. 52- 53). It is define d as â€Å"something that creates lasting value, leads to a noticeable and sustainable improvement, and addresses a complex challenge that has no easy answers† (Joni and Beyer, 2009, p. 50). Description of Procedures Because of the qualitative nature of the study, Joni and Beyer (2009) made use of primary sources from various companies—press releases, profiles, and case studies; and secondary sources—articles from newspaper and business journals. These are then used throughout the study as examples and basis for their arguments.

Personal narrative Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Personal narrative - Essay Example He wanted to study English to help with his university coursework. My motivation was more casual. I was simply interested in learning a little spoken Thai and a little about Thai culture. I wasn't interested in learning to read or to write Thai. This narrative will concentrate on the application of Cambourne's prerequisites of learning to my language exchange experience. These prerequisites, or conditions of learning, are immersion, demonstration, expectation, responsibility, approximation, employment, response and engagement. As noted by Cambourne, these conditions of learning do not exist in isolation. Rather, these conditions are intertwined. A learner's ability to approximate the target behavior, for instance, may be difficult or impossible absent immersion or demonstration. That said, the eight conditions set forth a clear analytical framework for assessing my Thai-English language exchange. Immersion refers to the depth and the comprehensiveness of the learning or literacy experience. It refers to the extent to which the learner is saturated by the learning experience. It also involves, in important ways, questions of authenticity. In my case, immersion was gravely lacking. As a result, it was difficult to approximate the modeled behavior, the spoken Thai, and my expectations were consequently diminished. My instructor was a native-speaker of Thai. He was well-educated and well-prepared for our lessons. From the point of view of immersion, however, he was my sole authentic connection to the Thai language. In the background, during our lessons at the coffee shop, there was English music playing on the radio. Everything, from menus to posters on the wall to the conversations at adjoining tables, was in English. Trying to focus on my Thai lessons was at times a distraction. It seemed external to the physical and cultural environment. In short, the lack of the immersion element affected in a significant way my total learning experience. The lack of authenticity and the lack of a broader learning exposure to the learning goals left me feeling a bit hopeless about learning to speak Thai. Demonstration: Creating Realistic and Practical Situations The second condition of learning, the demonstration prerequisite, concerns the modeling of the target behavior. This modeling may be formal or informal. My Thai instructor was rather creative in this respect. He brought magazines to our meetings and used them as teaching aids. I recall one lesson where we studied shopping and prices. He brought a clothing catalogue, a Thai silk catalogue, and a Thai cooking book as teaching aids. He handed me a worksheet in which he had typed English inquiries such as, "How much is a coke", with the Thai equivalent written alongside in English script. He modeled the correct pronunciation, made relevant grammatical distinctions, and created a salesperson-customer role-play for the clothing and silk catalogues and a waiter-customer role-play for the Thai cooking book. We took turns playing each of the roles. This was one of the most beneficial aspects of my learning experience. I was able to demonstrate what I had learned in a fairly realistic way. The context in which I was able to demonstrate my knowledge, based upon my instructor's models, was also quite practical. My instructor downplayed the theory in his presentation and modeling. As we were

Prinicples of Management Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Prinicples of Management - Term Paper Example Because those working in IT always need to plan ahead for the future, this makes them the best suited to be able to change management styles at short notice. Also, because there is a risk involved with most forms of leadership, those in IT are able to balance the risks and rewards and choose a successful strategy. IT managers also have to have good communication skills due to the technical terms involved; this can be beneficial when giving simple tasks that need to be done correctly. Because IT consultants always have to take onboard advice from their customers, they are best placed to listen to the needs of their staff. Also, because innovation is an important part of IT, this skill can be used to change as technology improves. Ben quotes Machiavelli, who says that â€Å"whosoever desires constant success must change his conduct with the times† (Ben, 2012). Finally, a good leader needs to understand the needs of their employees yet are aware of organizational objectives; IT p ersonnel can achieve this because they always have to satisfy a number of different people. Needed: Managers Who Are Leaders - In this article by Michael Maccoby, he discusses the need for research and technology manager to lead more than they manage. Research and technology is seen at the forefront of offering solutions to problems on a global scale. Innovation forms a big part of this since new ideas are constantly being sought. Many people find it easy to come up with new inventions; these people are known more as inventors. It takes innovators to be able to take a concept and market it to a wide range of people. In order to accomplish this, high collaboration and teamwork is necessary. Jim Meier is quoted as saying that seven factors are needed for achieving high performance collaborative teams, such as common purpose, trust, clear roles and responsibility, support, directed action, continued excellence, vitality and resiliency (Maccoby, 2009, p. 58). Even though the use of team s can be helpful, something more is required. Exceptional leadership is absolutely necessary when in comes to organizing a highly successful team. Meier says that trust is a key factor when it comes to a team being able to follow everything that a manager tells them (Maccoby, 2009, p. 59). A good leader needs to contain three elements in their management philosophy: ethics, moral reasoning, and practical values (Maccoby, 2009, p. 60). Developing Research/Technology Leaders - Michael Maccoby starts out with a comment that most managers have had some form of training in order to make them a better leader. Maccoby backs up this argument by saying that there are over one and a half million references for the Google search term â€Å"leadership training† (Maccoby, 2007, p. 65). However, many of these leadership training programs are ineffective. Maccoby proposes that research technology leadership training in particular should be centered on the four Ps: purpose, processes, people , and presentation (Maccoby, 2007, p. 66). For the first P, purpose, technology leaders often don’t understand why they are even doing a project let alone know how to successfully complete it. The first subject that leadership training should deal with is purpose, because this is the first step required to successfully run a project. For the second P, process, leaders need to understand the role that each team member or department has to offer. Once the process of an organization is made to run efficiently, it is that much

Americas Self-Interest :: American America History

America's Self-Interest America had remained mostly an isolated country until the late 1800's when the United States was faced with the opportunity of building a colonial empire. By 1890 the United States, like Europe, had began to expand its influence onto islands in the Caribbean and South Pacific areas. They entered in other countries' affairs claiming that it served the interests of all peoples and were motivated by Idealism. In reality, the United States was mostly after its own self-interest. The Spanish-American War, the United States' Open Door policy, and the control over the Panama Canal zone make it unclear if the United States was pursuing its own self-interest or was inspired by Idealism. In the Spanish-American War the United States was supposedly fighting for Cuba's independence from Spain. Though Idealism might have been present in the United States' reasons for war, there is evidence of America's self-interests in the war. The United States did fight to defend the Cubans but it also fought to profit out of the war. When the war ended and the United States won, it offered Cuba self-government only if they agreed to the terms of the Teller Amendment which states, "Cuba should allow the United States the right to buy or lease naval stations". Though there were advantages for the United States in the Spanish-American War, America fought mostly for the welfare of Cuba. A good example of America's pursuit for their own advantage in foreign affairs was the Open Door policy. China was expected to become a sphere of influence for European nations. The United States had a small percent of trade with China and was hungry for more. They issued the Open Door policy with the goal of preserving equal trading opportunities in China for all foreign nations. The United States was obviously only concerned for their own self-interest rather than the interest other countries trading with China. The United States claimed that they would build the Panama Canal for the advantage of Panama. Roosevelt said that he advanced "the needs of collective civilization" by speeding up the building of an interocean canal. The Canal was built by the United States for the use of the United States.
